Raku

Raku is a traditional Japanese firing technique. The glazed piece is pulled red-hot from the kiln and sealed in a metal container with newspaper or leaves; the smoke and sudden cooling leave random crackles and smoke marks, so no two pieces are alike. Raku has to be fired outdoors, and Cécile fires hers at a spring and fall workshop in the Catskills organized by Choplet Studio.
