About
Cécile Scherer
Born in Paris, working in clay in Miami.
Cécile Scherer was born and raised in Paris. After some twenty years in banking in New York, she took a drastic turn to explore a creative side she had long neglected, and has been working with clay since 2016.
She studied ceramics at the Art Students League of New York under Yasumitsu Morito, a sculptor and potter from Mashiko, and learned rokuro wheel throwing at Togei Kyoshitsu in New York. Live-model sessions led her to figurative sculpture; she now often combines the two, coiling and hand-building vessels with sculptural elements.
Fire and chance
Much of her work is fired in raku, at a workshop in the Catskills each spring and fall, or in the soda kiln of the Ceramic League of Miami, where she is a member. Both firings leave a large part to chance, which, for someone who admits to being on the controlling side, is exactly the point.
Influences
She draws on Japanese craftsmen such as Shoji Hamada and on French mid-century ceramists such as Roger Capron and the Cloutier brothers, whose anthropomorphic vessels combine humour, poetry and practicality.
